Ji Suyeon (지수연), also known by the mononym Suyeon, is a singer and stage actress under Fantagio. She is the leader of the girl group Weki Meki.
She was born on April 20, 1997 in Ilsanseo-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi-do. She is the oldest member of the group.
History[]
Early life[]
Suyeon's family consists of her parents and her younger brother. When she was 6, she started learning piano.[1]
Education[]
Suyeon attended Goyang Shinil Elementary School, but later transferred to Hwaseong Banseok Elementary School. After that, she attended Bansong Middle School. She also studied Applied Music at Hanlim Multi Arts School, as well as Baekseok Arts University.
Trainee Days[]
Before joining Fantagio, she was a trainee under CJ E&M and WM Entertainment. In 2016, she appeared on the Chinese survival show "Lady Bees".[2] In February 2017, she appeared in an Mnet commercial.[3] Yoojung appeared in the same commercial, but the two did not know each other at that time. She was a trainee between six and seven years.
Career[]
Suyeon was the last member of Weki Meki to be officially introduced to the public on June 4, 2017, during a VLIVE.[4] It was revealed she's the group's leader and lead vocalist. The group debuted on August 8, 2017 with their first mini album WEME.
In February 2019, Suyeon participated as Bell in Seollal Idol Special episode of King of Mask Singer. In September 2019, Suyeon and Yoojung participated in a survival show called V-1 (Vocal #1)[5], where Suyeon ended in 4th place.[6]
In August 2020, she began a project called #CH420[7] on Weki Meki's official YouTube channel, where she covers popular songs in a studio with a live band.[8]
In March 2022, she started her SoundCloud account with a cover of Wonstein's "Your Existence".[9]
On May 9, 2022, it was announced that Suyeon was cast in the stage musical "Bungee Jumping of Their Own", which is based on the 2001 film of the same name.[10] The production was set to run from June 22 to August 21, 2022 at the Hongik Art Center in Seoul, but was delayed to June 28 due to some cast and crew, including Suyeon, testing positive for COVID-19.[11][12] On June 27, it was announced that Suyeon has recovered and that she was released from quarantine.[13]
In August 2022, it was revealed that Suyeon is the singing voice behind Meta Miu, a virtual idol created by Felix and Fellaz.[14][15]
On September 16, 2022, it was announced that Suyeon would be a contestant on Mnet's new survival show "Artistock Game".[16] She took 24th place and was eliminated.
On April 4, 2023, it was announced that Suyeon joined the cast of the musical "Harlan County".[17] The musical ran from May 16 to July 15, 2023 at the KEPCO Art Center concert hall in Seoul.
On August 2, 2023, it was confirmed that Suyeon has been casted as 'Constance' in the musical "The Three Musketeers".[18] The musical ran from September 17 to November 19, 2023.
